Bold and punchy
"I used to be human once".
For as long as he can remember Animal has walked on all fours. A result of "that night" when the factory caught fire and exploded, releasing chemicals into the air. Now, he tells his story of how it has affected him and the cities on going fight with the kampani, who are responisble for that night. With his dog Jara and the old nun Ma Franci, who has looked afer him since he was small, Animal leads a hand to mouth exsistence and when an american doctor, Elli Barber opens a free clinic in town. Animal becomes mixed up in scams and plots and with his unique way of speaking Animal shows us a place destoryed by others and their fight for justice.
It's by pure chance that i picked this book up. I was told to hurry up when looking for a book, and grabbed this one after reading a jumble of letters on the page, i didnt even read what the story was about. And even still, i love this book. The way its written is different and even the crude way Animal "talks" is fresh and seems normal. His irrelevant swearing is comical and although he is telling a very sad story, his personality is reassuring in a way. A very smart story, made honest with it's characters and facts from the disaster its based on (the Union Carbide pesticide factory tragedy in Bhopal, India).
